(Lakewood) -- After falling behind by 15 points to White River in the third quarter, the Sequim Wolves boys basketball team came back to within one point with 80 seconds left, but ended up 3 points short in their effort to qualify for the regionals Tuesday night.

Sequim lost to the Hornets 52-49 at Lakes High School in West Central District hoops.

Jason Tyler had the hot hand for White River early, cashing in 7 first quarter markers as the Hornets led 13-9 at the first buzzer.

A long Wolves scoring drought in the second quarter ended with a pair of Corbin Webb free throws as the Hornets pushed their advantage to 24-11.

Tim Guan drained a Sequim triple at the halftime horn closing the deficit to 26-14.

The Wolves fell behind 33-18 in the third period, but Webb began to attack the rack and scored 10 points in the quarter, including six charity tosses.

Webb finished with a game-high 23 markers.

A 15-7 Wolves fourth quarter run concluded with a Gabe Carter trey with 80 seconds left, cutting the deficit to 49-48.

Sequim failed to convert two chances to take the lead - a near-miss triple by Hill and a blocked shot on a fast break layup attempt by Carter in the final seconds.

Billy Kiel iced the game for White River with a pair of freebies.

White River (20-5) clinched a regional berth and will play Clover Park in the district semifinals Saturday at 8:15 at Foss High in Tacoma.

Sequim (15-8) will meet the Eatonville Cruisers in the loser out consolation bracket Saturday at 11 at Foss, needing three wins -- Saturday, Monday and Tuesday -- to nab a regional spot.

(Silverdale) -- A 14-0 third quarter run broke up a close game and propelled the Kingston Buccaneers to a 69-56 2A subdistrict boys basketball victory over the Sequim Wolves Saturday afternoon at Klahowya.

Kingston rebounded from a 49-46 loss to Evergreen Friday and claimed the third seed into the West Central District tourney Thursday.

The Bucs will play the winner of Tuesday's Eatonville - Sumner game at Foss High School in Tacoma on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Sequim (15-7) lost both subdistrict contests over the weekend, but take the fourth district seed into a second-round contest Thursday at 6 p.m. at Lakes High School in Lakewood.

The Wolves will play the winner of Tuesday's game between Renton and White River.

A strong 18-point effort by senior post Sam Byers led the way for the Olympic League champion Buccaneers.

KT Deam scored 14, while Cody Combs and Richie Sander connected for 11 points apiece.

Kingston (18-4) jumped out a pair of 8-point leads in the opening quarter after a pair of triples by Deam and three inside hoops by Byers.

The Bucs were up 18-13 at the first buzzer.

Sequim senior guard Evan Hill scored seven points in the second quarter and the Wolves chopped the Bucs advantage to a single bucket at intermission -- 28-26.

The wheels came off the bus for Sequim in the third quarter when the Wolves turned stone cold and allowed a 37-33 Kingston lead to balloon to 51-33 before Corbin Webb ended the string with a free throw with 24 seconds left in the period.

The Bucs outscored Sequim 24-8 in the third period and led 52-34 heading into the final stanza.

The Wolves were led by Hill, Jayson Brocklesby, Tim Guan and Webb with 9 points apiece.

(Silverdale) -- Sophomore sensation Ahmaad Rorie scored 27 points Friday night, leading the Clover Park Warriors to a 66-55 decision over the Sequim Wolves in 2A subdistrict boys action at Klahowya Secondary School.

Clover Park, the defending state 2A champions, will play the Evergreen Wolverines, a 49-46 victor over Kingston Friday, for the 1st and 2nd seeds to the district tournament tonight at 6 in the Klahowya Gym.

Sequim (15-6) will meet Kingston (17-4) for the 3rd and 4th seeds into the district at 4 p.m. at Klahowya.

The Warriors led 16-9 at the first buzzer as Rorie led the way with 9 points in the period.

Clover Park (18-4) opened up a 16 point lead midway through the second quarter as Rorie, Xavier Means and David Crisp contributed a combined 17 markers in the stanza.

Means finished with 12 and Crisp threw in 11 for CP.

The Wolves closed the gap to 13 at halftime as Jayson Brocklesby scored 10 of his team-high 18 markers before intermission.

The Warriors pushed their lead to as many as 19 points in the second half, but Sequim managed to cut the deficit into the single digits at 60-51 in the final minutes.

Corbin Webb had 14 of his 17 counters after halftime and Gabe Carter tallied 13 for the Wolves.

Webb scores 25 as Sequim boys beat PA 58-51

(Sequim) -- Sequim's Corbin Webb scored 13 of his 25 points in the third quarter, keying a 13-0 run that brought the Wolves from behind and eventually delivered a 58-51 boys Olympic League victory over the Port Angeles Roughriders Tuesday night.

Port Angeles and Sequim both finish the regular season with 12-4 league marks, but the Wolves victory completed a 2-0 season sweep over their archrivals and clinched the OL's second seed into the subdistrict playoffs beginning Friday night.

Sequim will play the defending 2A state champion Clover Park Warriors Friday at 8 at Klahowya Secondary School outside Silverdale.

Port Angeles takes the OL's third subdistrict seed and will meet the Sumner Spartans Friday at 8 at Foster High School in Tukwila.

Opening the contest before a packed Rick Kaps Gym crowd, webb canned a pair of triples, Frank Catelli scored two baskets inside the paint and Jayson Brocklesby hit for 5 points as the Wolves jumped ahead 15-6 in the early going.

The Riders countered, hitting the last 7 points of the first period and closed to within two at 15-13 at the first buzzer.

Keenan Walker had 5 of his 7 points before intermission and scored a basket early in the second quarter that completed an 11-0 Rider run with the visitor's ahead 17-15.

Trailing by 3 with 2:30 left in the half, Sequim got a basket in the paint from Gabe Carter, then Jayson Brocklesby energized the home crowd with a breakaway slam as the Wolves regained the lead 21-20.

A pair of Carter free throws left Sequim up 23-22 at the half.

PA moved ahead 30-27 midway through the third period, before Webb triggered a 13-nothing Sequim run -- his 17-footer giving the home squad the advantage at 31-30.

Webb's 23-foot triple completed the string with the Wolves ahead 40-30 with 30 seconds left in the quarter.

Cameron Braithwaite beat the third period buzzer with a running triple that cut the Rider deficit to seven -- 40-33.

Reggie Burke had an excellent second half for Port Angeles, scoring 15 of his team-high 18 points after intermission.

Burke had 11 final period markers as the Roughriders closed to the within four on two occasions in final quarter, but Webb and the Wolves answered on every challenge.

Both PA and Sequim have already qualified for the West Central District Tournament next week after Friday and Saturday subdistrict seeding games.

However, the Wolves will be one of the four top district seeds to earn a first-round bye.

Sequim will be able to clinch a regional berth a week from Thursday with a win at the second round of district.

Port Angeles will need Tuesday and Thursday district victories next week to punch its ticket to the regionals for the second consecutive season.

The Port Angeles Roughrider girls topped Sequim Tuesday night, 48-30 in their tuneup for West Central District sub-district play which opens Thursday.

The Riders (14-5) will meet SPSL #1 White River at Clover Park Thursday at 7:30.

Kingston will meet Renton in the first game at 5:30. All four teams will be seeded into the WCD event next week.

Port Angeles led 11-6 at the first break, then Sequim could only get off six shots in the second period and nary a shot hit the bottom of the net and the Riders took a 22-6 lead into the second half.

PA had eight scorers, led by Kiah Jones with 13. Haleigh Harrison had 10 for Sequim, which finished the season 5-15.

(Sequim) -- Sequim roared out to the first 11 points of the game Saturday night against Bremerton and never let up, thrashing the Knights 88-52 at Rick Kaps Gym.

Jayson Brocklesby led the way for the Wolves with 24 points, including 19 in the first half.

The Wolves led 24-6 after the first quarter and 48-25 at halftime.

Gabe Carter had 13 points for Sequim and Corbin Webb had 12.

Sequim (14-5 overall, 11-4 in Olympic League play) had reserves playing the entire fourth quarter as sophomore Rory Kallappa tallied 11, Anthony Pinza had 7 and Alex Barry had 6 points.

Bremerton (10-9 overall, 9-6 in Olympic League play) got 15 from Deonti Dixon and Mikey Lawrence chipped in 10.

The Wolves 88 points is the 12th highest point output in school history, a mark last surpassed by Sequim's 2000-01 team on six occasions, including a record 101 tallies against Port Townsend.

Sequim will host Port Angeles Tuesday at Rick Kaps Gym, with the winner claiming second place in the final league standings and a bye in first round of West Central District play after subdistrict seeding games on Feb 10th and 11th.

(Sequim) -- Kingston's Sam Byers scored 20 points Friday night as the Buccaneers beat Sequim 67-45 and clinched a share of the Olympic League boys basketball title.

Byers used his mastery of post moves around the hoop and dominated the inside game, getting 12 markers in the second half.

KT Deam paced the Bucs with 13, Cody Combs added 10 and Connor Wall had 8 points for Kingston.

Kingston's Byers had 6 first quarter counters, but the Wolves managed to keep it close, trailing 13-7 after one period.

Junior Jayson Brocklesby led 3 double-figure Sequim scorers with 24 points.

Sequim (13-4 overall, 10-3 in Olympic League play) led from tipoff to final buzzer against the scrappy and hustling Vikings.

Brocklesby had 9 counters in the first period as the Wolves had a 17-10 advantage at the first break.

Senior Corbin Webb returned to action after an ankle sprain suffered Tuesday at Klahowya and scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half.

Junior Gabe Carter tallied 9 of his 11 markers before halftime as Sequim led by 15 at intermission -- 36-21.

Sequim reserves played a majority of the second half as sophomore Anthony Pinza and freshman Alex Barry scored 6 points apiece.

(Sequim) -- Gabe Carter scored a career-high 24 points as the Sequim High Wolves beat the North Mason Bulldogs 64-37 Wednesday night at Rick Kaps Gym.

Jayson Brocklesby chipped in 16 as the Wolves led wire-to-wire against the Boys from Belfair.

Sequim (12-4 overall and 9-3 in Olympic League play) scored the first 10 points of the contest before the first Bulldogs hoop and had a 22-9 advantage at the first buzzer.

Carter had 12 markers in the first stanza and 19 at halftime, when Sequim led 41-20.

North Mason (1-15 overall and 1-12 in Olympic League) was topped by the 12 point effort of Anthony Price.

The Wolves will host North Kitsap Friday night.

(Silverdale) -- Clark Rose scored 20 points and Josh Ganowski added 15 as the Klahowya Eagles ripped the Sequim Wolves 61-46 Tuesday night.

The Eagles avenged a 56-31 whipping by Sequim on December 14th at Rick Kaps Gym, when Rose was held scoreless.

The game was nip and tuck early with the Eagles holding a 13-12 edge at the first break.

Sequim's Corbin Webb connected for 7 early points, but suffered an apparent ankle sprain in the second quarter and was forced from the contest.

Gabe Carter was Sequim's team-high scorer with 19 points and Jayson Brocklesby chipped in 12 tallies.

The Eagles took a 4-point lead into halftime at 29-25. Sequim trailed by 8 going into the final quarter 41-33 and got no closer than 6 in the final stanza.

Sequim dropped to 11-4 on the season and 8-3 in Olympic League action, tied for second place with Port Angeles, a 68-65 victor over Bremerton.

Klahowya improved to 6-8 on the campaign, 6-4 in Olympic League games.

Sequim hosts the North Mason Bulldogs Wednesday at Rick Kaps Gym for a makeup game originally scheduled last week.

The two squads came into the game deadlocked for second place in the Olympic League and the victory kept the Wolves a game behind first-place Kingston, a 65-31 victor over North Kitsap.

A superlative effort by Sequim's defense held PA to just 7 points in each of the opening 3 quarters.

Sequim (11-3 overall and 8-2 in Olympic League play) led 12-7 at the first quarter break, after the Riders' first basket came on Cole Uvila's klaxon-beating triple, eight minutes into the contest.

The sharpshooting Uvila had five triples and was the game-high scorer with 17 markers.

Port Angeles (11-3 overall and 7-3 in Olympic League play) was paced by Hayden McCartney and Marshall Elliott with 6 points apiece.

The Wolves led 26-14 at halftime. Sequim extended the lead to 20 points midway through the third period before Uvila nailed another trey to beat the third quarter buzzer and cut the deficit to 36-21.

Gabe Carter contributed 7 points for the Wolves, while Evan Hill, Alex Barry and Frank Catelli chipped in 4 points each.

(Port Angeles) -- The Port Angeles Roughriders girls basketball team topped the Sequim Wolves 52-27 Friday night in the first meeting of the year for the archrivals.
PA took a 26-17 halftime lead, then outscored Sequim 15-1 in the third period to put the game away.
Port Angeles was led in scoring by Paxton Rodocker with 11, while Maddy Hinrichs and Bailee Jones added 9 points each.
Kia Jones came off the Rider bench to score 11.
Caitlin Stofferahn led Sequim with 9, but the Wolves shot just 6 of 34 from the field for 18 percent and had 22 turnovers.
The win pushed the Riders past North Kitsap into third place in the league standings.

(Port Townsend) -- Jayson Brocklesby scored 22 points and Corbin Webb added 21 as the Sequim High Wolves beat the Port Townsend Redskins 59-41 Tuesday night at Bruce Blevins Gym.

Sequim (10-3 overall and 7-2 in Olympic League play) trailed by one point at both the end of the first period -- 14-13 -- and at intermission --31-30.

Port Townsend (2-11 overall and 1-9 in Olympic League play) kept things interesting in the first half by connecting on five treys -- 3 by Luke Coppenrath and 2 by Kyle Kelly.

The Wolves ramped up their defense in the second half and the Redskins cooled from beyond the arc, as Sequim outscored Port Townsend 29-10 in the final two periods.

Coppenrath had a team-high 9 points for Townsend, while Kelly and Paul Spaltenstein chipped in 8 points apiece.

Sequim will visit Port Angeles Friday night and Port Townsend hosts Chimacum Saturday.

(Silverdale) -- Sequim junior Tim Guan connected on five 3-pointers, scoring a team-high 16 points as the Wolves beat the Olympic Trojans 62-49 Friday night.

Sequim (9-3 overall, 6-2 in Olympic League play) trailed 18-16 at the first quarter break, but outscored Olympic 18-7 in the second stanza, taking a 34-25 advantage to the halftime locker room.

The Wolves repeatedly made the extra pass to find the open man and opened up a 16-point bulge going into the final period -- 51-35.

Corbin Webb had 14 for Sequim, while Gabe Carter had 11 and Jayson Brocklesby scored 10 points.

Olympic (5-6 overall, 3-5 in Olympic League play) got a game-high 20 points from Trent Gallagher and Quentin Phillips added 7 markers for the Trojans.

(Kingston) -- The Kingston home court advantage parlayed into nine 3-pointers Tuesday night as the Buccaneers shot down the Sequim Wolves 53-45 and remained unbeaten in the Olympic League boys hoops campaign.

Kingston (9-2, 7-0 in Olympic League action) got four treys from Richie Sander, including three in the opening quarter that gave the Bucs a 15-14 advantage at the first buzzer.

Sander finished with a team-high 15 points.

KT Deam got the hot hand for Kingston in the second period, connecting on 3 triples for 9 of his 11 markers.

Gabe Carter kept Sequim close in the first half by hitting 12 of his game-high 16 points.

Sam Byers scored all 7 of his points in the second stanza as Kingston led 31-27 at intermission.

Lynden Christian took advantage of second and third shot opportunities in the final 2 quarters, many by talented 6-7 junior center Isaac Reimer, who was the game-high scorer with 21 points.

The Wolves (7-1 overall and 5-1 in Olympic League play) broke out of an 8-8 tie after the first quarter, outscoring the Vikings 16-5 in the second period in taking a 24-13 halftime lead.

Brocklesby scored 9 of his 13 points before halftime.

(Sequim) -- A suffocating Sequim man-to-man defense forced 23 Klahowya turnovers Wednesday night as the Wolves whipped the Eagles 56-31 at Rick Kaps Gym.

Sequim improved to 6-1 overall with a 4-1 Olympic League mark; tied for second with Port Angeles -- a 73-51 winner over Bremerton.

The loss to the Wolves dropped Klahowya into third place at 3-1 (3-5 overall).

Kingston destroyed Port Townsend 72-23 and remained unbeaten in OL action at 4-0, 5-2 overall.

In Sequim, Klahowya's Drew Fagan hit for 7 of his 9 points in the first quarter as the lead changed hands 3 times in the early going.

Sequim freshman Alex Barry broke the last of 4 ties with a triple and the Wolves had a 14-11 advantage after one period.

Barry finished with 4 treys and 14 points, all in the first half.

Sequim turned up the defensive intensity in the second period, outscoring the Eagles 17-4.

Sequim (5-1, 3-1 in Olympic League play) suffered its first loss of the season as Bremerton took advantage on the offensive boards, scoring a number of second chance baskets.

The Knights (2-3, 2-1 in Olympic League play) played a tough, extended zone defense that allowed few open looks at the hoop for the Wolves.

After an early 4-2 Sequim advantage, Bremerton scored the last 7 points of the opening quarter, leading 9-4 at the first break.

The game was tied at 13 after the first quarter and Sequim took a one-point halftime advantage on a put-back by Jayson Brocklesby at 26-25.

Brocklesby finished with 8 points.

Peninsula (2-2) took a 4 point lead on a triple by Cody Olson early in the third period -- 32-28.

The Wolves regained the advantage for good after a pair of hoops by Tim Guan, leading 33-32 with 4:15 remaining in the third period.

Sequim (4-0, 2-0 in Olympic League play) went into the final quarter ahead 40-35, paced by the shooting and driving of Webb, who finished the contest a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line.

(Sequim) -- Sequim's boys basketball team fought back from an early 12 point deficit and defeated the Olympic Trojans 57-49 Friday night at Rick Kaps Gym.

The Wolves (2-0, 1-0 in Olympic League play) trailed 17-5 at the first quarter break after the Trojans' Quentin Phillips sliced and diced for 10 of his team-high 20 points in the period.

The tide slowly turned for the Wolves as Jayson Brocklesby scored 13 of his game-high 21 markers in the second quarter and Sequim closed to within 3 points at halftime -- 30-27.

The third quarter was a defensive masterpiece for the Wolves, holding Olympic to just 2 field goals, outscoring the Trojans 16-4.

With the contest tied at 34 with 4 minutes left in the period, junior Tim Guan scorched the net on a triple that gave Sequim the lead 37-34.

Moments later, junior Dylan Eekoff drained a trey to increase the advantage for Sequim to 40-34.

Eekoff had several key rebounds filling in for foul-plagued senior Frank Catelli and junior Gabe Carter, who is out for at least 4 weeks with a broken left pinky finger suffered Wednesday night in Sequim's victory over Bainbridge.

Sequim scored the final 9 points of the third period, leading 43-34 at the break.

A key matchup in Friday's contest featured a fierce guard battle between Sequim's Corbin Webb and Olympic's Trent Gallagher.

Gallagher was held to a single trey and was limited to 7 points, all in the first half.

Webb was stymied from the field as well, connecting on just 2 baskets, but hit 7 of his 10 free throws to complete an 11 point effort.

Sequim hit 21 of 29 attempts from the charity stripe, including 10 of 12 in the final period, when the Trojans could come no closer than 4 points down the stretch.

Olympic (1-1, 0-1 in Olympic League play) hosts Kingston, a 52-49 winner over Port Angeles, on Tuesday night.

Sequim has three games next week, hosting Port Townsend Tuesday, traveling to Gig Harbor Wednesday for a non-leaguer with Peninsula and a jaunt to Belfair Friday for a league contest against North Mason.

(Sequim) -- Senior guard Corbin Webb scored 25 points, leading the Sequim Wolves to a season-opening 56-52 victory over the Bainbridge Spartans.

The Wolves held on for the non-league victory after leading by 11 points at the first quarter break and at halftime.

The Spartans' Chris Bell connected on a game-high 32 points, including 10 in the third period when Bainbridge closed to within 9 at 53-35.

Sequim hit 9 of 14 free throws in the final quarter to hold on to the victory.

Junior Jayson Brocklesby added 16 points for Sequim.

The Wolves host Olympic for the league opener Friday night at Rick Kaps Gym.

(Poulsbo) -- The W.F. West High School Bearcats of Chehalis overwhelmed the Sequim High Wolves 52-21 in the first-round of the State 2A football playoffs Friday night at North Kitsap Stadium.

Washington State University-bound Mitch Gueller scored on the first two scrimmage plays for the Bearcats on runs of 60 and 73 yards as the Bearcats surged to a 14-0 advantage just 2 minutes and 7 seconds into the game.

"We had our back-side guys there on the first TD run with our outside linebacker squared up on him (Gueller) and he made him miss", observed Sequim coach Erik Wiker, who emphasized tackling Gueller was a priority during practices.

"We were there scheme-wise, but player-wise he jukes us and goes 60 yards," said Wiker, "He's a very fast kid and agile."

The Chehalis team (9-2) will play Lakewood next week in the state quarterfinals.

W.F. West led 28-0 at the end of the first quarter and 31-7 at halftime.

The Bearcats scored three more touchdowns in the third quarter to lead 52-7.

Sequim tallied twice in the final quarter - on an 11-yard run by quarterback Jack Wiker and a 26-yard run by running back Lopaka Yasumura.

The weather had no effect on the contest after a windstorm blew through the Kitsap Peninsula several hours before kickoff.

Wiker was 18-of-38 passing for 154 yards and was intercepted 4 times. He rushed 19 times for 83 yards.

The Wolves played the final three games of the season without Olympic League co-MVP quarterback/linebacker Frank Catelli, who suffered a hip flexor/groin muscle injury against Olympic on October 13th.

He re-aggravated the injury in a 33-13 loss to North Kitsap the following week.

"We overcame a lot of things." said Wiker. "Frank Catelli plays in 5 games out of 10 on a good team, but not a great one, then you take out our best player, who is great . . . we accomplished a lot.

"No offense to anyone, but going into the playoffs with a backup quarterback (Wiker) and backup running back (Lopaka Yasumura) is not the most ideal thing in the world," Erik Wiker noted. "Jack's only been a quarterback half a season. He'll be a great one next year."

Despite the season-ending loss, Wiker said the Wolves can be proud of another Olympic League championship and their non-league victory at Whatcom County powerhouse Meridian.
The Wolves finished the season with a 9-2 record. "I think they overachieved." said Wiker.

(Poulsbo) -- Sequim quarterback Jack Wiker connected with Tyler Forshaw on a 25-yard touchdown pass with 11 seconds remaining as the Wolves came from behind to beat the Eatonville Cruisers 40-34 in a subdistrict football game Saturday at North Kitsap Stadium.

Wiker, who stepped up once again for the injured Frank Catelli, completed 19-of-31 passes for 289 yards and 4 touchdowns as the Wolves advanced to the state playoffs for the sixth consecutive season.

Sequim (9-1) will play W.F. West of Chehalis next week in the first round next week.

Eatonville (4-6) got on the board first with Brandon Atkins' 7-yard run, making it 7-0 Cruisers with 2:54 left in the opening quarter.

Sequim pulled ahead in the second period with a pair of Wiker touchdown passes - a 2-yarder to Michael Ballard and a 30-yarder to Christian Miles wedged between a spectacular 80-yard punt return TD by Forshaw.

The Wolves led 20-7 with 1:29 left until intermission.

Eatonville drove 71 yards in 8 plays, scoring on a 3-yard run by quarterback Zach Fairhart as the first half clock expired, closing the Cruisers to within 20-14.

Fairhart was 12-of-20 for 142 yards in passing, while rushing 10 times for 40 yards and a TD.

The Pierce County visitors from the South Puget Sound League mounted another scoring march to begin the third stanza, taking a 21-20 lead on the first of three Keegan Brady touchdown runs.

Brady carried the ball 35 times for 170 yards.

The Eatonville lead was brief as Sequim went for a long range bomb and an 80-yard connection between Wiker and Miles, putting Sequim up 26-21 with 8:48 left in the third quarter.

Miles caught 4 passes for 138 yards and 2 scores.

Wiker capped off another Sequim drive with a 7-yard run as the third quarter ended, leaving the Wolves ahead 33-21.

Eatonville closed to within 5 points at 33-28 on Brady's 1-yard plunge with 5:43 left, capping a 14-play, 64-yard march.

Sequim failed to convert a 4th-and-5 from its own 36 after Miles was stopped for a 3-yard loss on a throwback screen pass with 4:37 remaining.

The Cruisers took 5 plays to cover the 32 yards for the go-ahead score from Brady on an 11-yard run with 2:08 left in the fourth quarter.

The visitors led 34-33 after a failed two-point conversion.

The Olympic League champions' drive to the winning score of 80 yards in 10 plays was rallied by Wiker's 17-yard gain on 3rd-and-11 from their own 19-yard-line.

Wiker hit Forshaw for 11 yards to the Sequim 46, then Eatonville was flagged for pass interference, which gave the Wolves a first-down at the Cruisers' 38.

Forshaw caught a 5-yard pass, then Wiker carried twice for 8 yards, setting up a 1st-and-10 at the Eatonville 25.

Wiker pump faked off a roll-out to the right, then fired into the right corner of the end zone, where Forshaw out-maneuvered his defender at the last moment to catch the game-winning score.

Sequim called an overload to the left side of the formation on the ensuing kickoff with 11 seconds left and Jonathan Campbell's short pooch kick was recovered by the Wolves' Lopaka Yasumura at Eatonville 43.

Wiker took a knee on the final play to set off the Sequim victory celebration.

(Sequim) -- The Sequim Wolves came from behind in the second half to defeat the Port Angeles Roughriders 27-14 Friday night, clinching their third consecutive Olympic League championship.

About 15-hundred fans witnessed the Friday's contest at Sequim High School.

Port Angeles got the only touchdown of the first half after capitalizing on a Sequim fumble by quarterback Cody Field at the Wolves 4-yard-line.

Two plays later, running back Dylan Brewer crashed into the end zone putting the green and white ahead 7-0 with 5:47 left in the second quarter.

Brewer had a tremendous contest, carrying the ball 38 times for 194 yards and 2 scores.

The Roughriders, hampered by the loss of their top 3 receivers to injury, used a smash-mouth "Power I" formation for the majority of the contest, passing just three times, all which were intercepted by Sequim.

Port Angeles had 258 rushing yards to Sequim's 159.

PA quarterback Keenen Walker, who suffered a broken forearm the previous week, played running back and safety for the Riders wearing a short cast, rushing for 59 yards on 10 carries.

The momentum of the game changed in the third quarter with the appearance of Sequim quarterback Jack Wiker, who missed the first half due to a coach's decision.

Wiker drove the Wolves to touchdowns on the first three drives of the second half, keeping the ball on scoring rushes of 1, 3 and 11 yards, putting Sequim ahead 19-7 with 11:38 remaining in the contest.

Wiker carried the ball 15 times for 75 yards, while connecting on 9-of-14 passes for 90 yards.

Port Angeles (6-3 overall, 4-3 in Olympic League play) didn't back down and answered with a 50-yard Brewer touchdown rumble to close within 19-14 with 7:32 left in the final quarter.

Port Angeles faces a tough road into the state playoffs with a pig-tail game Tuesday night against the Seamount League's number 3 team at a site to be announced.

The winner of the pigtail game Tuesday will meet the South Puget Sound League champion Franklin Pierce Cardinals a week from today.

Sequim (8-1, 6-1 in Olympic League play) will play Eatonville, the South Puget Sound League's number 4 entry, in a 2A subdistrict playoff game Saturday, November 5th at 7 p.m. at Poulsbo's North Kitsap Stadium.

(Poulsbo) -- The North Kitsap Vikings handed the Sequim Wolves their first league loss since 2008, 33-13 at North Kitsap Stadium Friday night.

Sequim (7-1 overall, 5-1 in Olympic League play) needs a victory over Port Angeles and a Kingston win over North Kitsap next week to retain its league championship.

North Kitsap's Connor McCorkle slayed Sequim with two long touchdown plays -- a 73-yard TD run early in the opening quarter and a 74-yard scoring reception from AJ Milyard in the second stanza.

Another Vikings' touchdown pass from Milyard to Dan Mitchell from 14 yards boosted the NK lead to 24-7 with 1:43 left in the first half.

Disaster came for Sequim when Frank Catelli's pass was intercepted by North's Jordan Hadden and returned 34 yards for a score with 42 seconds remaining before intermission, putting the Vikings ahead 30-7.

Sequim won the second half 6-3, scoring with 1:26 left in the third quarter on a 2-yard Jack Wiker run.

North Kitsap (5-3, 5-1 in Olympic League play) connected on a 22-yard Kyler Gracey field goal with 6:11 remaining for the final count of 33-13.

(Silverdale) -- The fourth-ranked Sequim High Wolves football team moved to 7-0 on the 2011 season after a 35-8 drubbing of the Olympic Trojans Thursday night.

Despite the convincing victory, an injury to starting quarterback Frank Catelli left a feeling of uneasiness for Sequim fans.

Catelli suffered a groin pull after a hit by Olympic's Harrison Fuller late in the third quarter.

The star senior's status is undetermined for next Friday's game at North Kitsap.

Sequim running back and backup QB Jack Wiker also left the game in the second half after a hit to the shin, but is expected to return next week.

Sequim rallies for thrilling 27-13 Homecoming win over Kingston

(Sequim) -- A ball control, smash-mouth strategy nearly paid off for the Kingston Buccaneers Friday night until Sequim rallied with two huge fourth quarter plays, leading to a thrilling 27-13 Homecoming victory.

The Kitsap County visitors held possession for 38 of the contest's 48 minutes.

"I realize (Dan) Novick is a really good coach and that's exactly what they wanted to do in sticking with the running game," Sequim coach Erik Wiker said. "Kingston totally wanted to keep the ball out of our hands for the whole game, taking 30 seconds between plays to keep us out of our rhythm, and not give us the ball."

Trailing 13-7, Kingston drove 83 yards in 14 plays, capped by quarterback Sam Byers' 1-yard keeper with 9:34 left in the fourth quarter.

Byers rushed 23 times for 92 yards and 2 scores.

Attempting the go-ahead extra point, Kingston placement holder Ben McMullen lost control of the snap and was swarmed by the Wolves, keeping the score tied at 13.

The turn-of-the-tide came on the Bucs' ensuing squib kick, taken after two bounces by Sequim's Tyler Forshaw at his own 19-yard-line.

The mercurial Wolves senior took the ball up the right sideline and -- with the help of 2 critical blocks -- evaded Kingston pursuit 81 yards to pay dirt, giving Sequim a 20-13 advantage with 9:19 remaining.

"He (Forshaw) is a game-changer with the long run and the pick (of Byers at the end of the first half) and that's just stepping up and making the play -- we have lots of guys that fit that category," Coach Wiker noted. "I think (the kickoff return) was the key play that put them behind the 8-ball."

Emulating the strategy of former Seattle Seahawks coach Chuck Knox, the Buccaneers employed "Ground Chuck", pounding the ball into Sequim territory, reaching the Sequim 8-yard-line before a sack of Byers and a penalty left Kingston facing a 4th-and-goal from the Wolves 20-yard-line with 1:25 left in regulation.

Byers faced a heavy Sequim rush and his pass attempt fell incomplete near the goal line.

Sequim seized the moment on the next scrimmage play as Jack Wiker took advantage of supreme blocking and raced 80 yards up the middle for a score, putting the game out of reach at 27-13.

Wiker packed the pigskin 5 times for 108 yards.

Senior quarterback Frank Catelli, who was crowned Homecoming king at halftime, returned from a one-game suspension, completing 10-of-18 passes for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Catelli now leads Olympic League signal callers with 12 TD strikes on the campaign.

Kingston tailback Nick Tabanera led all rushers with 136 yards on 25 carries.

Erik Wiker credited his defensive backs for pass coverage, along with linemen Clay Charley and Jake Hudson, plus linebacker Josh McElrath for key stops during the contest.

Wiker thought the struggle with Kingston will send a message to his squad for future games.

"I think we had lackadaisical practices this week where (the players) thought they would be meeting the Kingston of old where we win by 50," Wiker mused. "They (Kingston) played harder and we didn't come to play a league championship game."

See-saw first half

Kingston (3-3 overall, 2-2 in Olympic League play) established their clock-dominating tactics during the first drive of the contest, moving just 30 yards, but running 10 plays and burning 6 minutes and 40 seconds off the clock, before a 4th-and-4 fake punt run at the Sequim 46 by Nick Tabanera was stopped a yard short of a first down by the Wolves.

Sequim (6-0 overall, 4-0 in Olympic League play) took possession, driving 53 yards in 9 plays, as Frank Catelli connected with Nick Ramirez for an 8-yard scoring pass with 2:17 remaining in the first quarter, giving the hosts an initial 7-0 advantage after Jonathan Campbell's PAT.

Kingston responded, grinding out 76 yards in 13 plays, culminated with Byers' 1-yard keeper with 6:02 left in the first half, creating a 7-7 deadlock.

The Wolves moved ahead after a 7-play, 50-yard march with the Catelli-to-Ramirez duo connecting for a score for the fourth time in two games, this time from 4 yards, giving Sequim a 13-7 lead with 4:25 remaining until intermission.

Kingston threatened to tie before halftime with a drive into the Sequim red zone, but Forshaw's

interception of Byers in the end zone with 25 seconds remaining, thwarted the Bucs' opportunity.

Sequim visits Olympic Thursday night

Up next week, Sequim travels to Kitsap County for a Thursday night matchup against the Olympic Trojans (2-4 overall, 2-2 in Olympic League play), a 34-28 overtime winner over North Kitsap Friday.

Sequim beat Olympic 63-8 at home last season.

(Sequim) -- Sequim junior quarterback Jack Wiker completed 8-of-20 passes for 144 yards and 3 touchdowns, while rushing for 152 yards and 3 more scores as the Wolves ripped the North Mason Bulldogs 48-20 Friday night.

Sequim improved its record to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Olympic League action.

North Mason turned the ball over to Sequim on 4 consecutive first quarter possessions, allowing the Wolves to forge a 35-0 lead.

Wolves senior receiver Nick Ramirez caught 5 passes for 82 yards and the first 2 touchdowns of the contest, along with 2 interceptions on defense.

Sequim's Tyler Forshaw caught a 36-yard TD pass and Wiker rushed for a pair of first half scores.

North Mason made things interesting with a 50-yard Tommy Renne quarterback TD run and a 1-yard TD plunge by fullback Tommy Marsh to cut the Sequim lead to 35-12 with 2:58 before halftime.

Renne rushed 16 times for 122 yards and a score, while Marsh packed the ball 14 times for 144 yards and a TD.

The Bulldogs were turned away from the end zone on a 4th-and-goal from the Sequim 1-yard-line as time expired for the first half before North Mason could run a scrimmage play.

Sequim (5-0, 3-0 in Olympic League play) pulled away in the third quarter with 13 more points; a 57-yard interception return for a touchdown by Tyler Forshaw and a 19-yard TD rush by Wiker.

The Wolves' Clay Charley recovered two North Mason fumbles during the contest.

The Bulldogs scored the final touchdown with 2:25 left on a 32-yard rush by slotback Anthony Price.

North Mason (0-5 overall, 0-3 in Olympic League play) will host Port Angeles Friday.

(Sequim) -- The Sequim High Wolves football team improved their record to 4-0 on the 2011 campaign with a 34-6 Olympic League victory over the Bremerton Knights on Friday.

Senior quarterback Frank Catelli completed 23-of-34 passes for 292 yards and 2 touchdowns and rushed 6 times for 55 yards and another score as the Wolves improved to 2-0 in league action.

However, Catelli was ejected from the contest in the third quarter after he sent a retaliating kick towards a Bremerton player, who allegedly threw 2 punches into Catelli's face during a post-tackle scrum.

Per state rule, Catelli will be forced to sit out Sequim's game next week against the winless North Mason Bulldogs in Sequim.

Sequim Coach Erik Wiker told KONP after the game he saw the punches into Catelli's face from the sidelines that was later verified by sideline video.

Game officials apparently only observed Catelli's kick, which drew the flag and his ejection.

Running back Jack Wiker scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns less than 2 minutes into the game on a 12-yard jaunt, capping an 8-play, 46-yard drive for a 7-0 Sequim advantage.

Catelli finished another 46-yard Sequim march with a 14-yard run with 7:30 left in the opening stanza as the Wolves extended their lead to 14-0.

Another 53-second Sequim scoring drive put the Wolves up 21-0 with 33 seconds remaining in the first quarter when Catelli connected with Michael Ballard on a 22-yard TD strike.

Wiker's second scoring run from 5 yards put Sequim ahead 27-0 halfway through the second period.

The final Wolves score of the game came 21 seconds before intermission when Catelli completed his 11th touchdown pass of the season to Wiker for 14 yards and a 34-0 halftime lead.

Bremerton quarterback Mikey Lawrence, who completed 13-of-35 passes for 138 yards and rushed 24 times for 89 yards, scored the Knights lone TD with 2:32 remaining.

Lawrence was intercepted 4 times, 3 by Tyler Forshaw and once by Nick Ramirez in the final minute of the contest.
